King #1 (comic book) - Paul's Review

*I received this book as an eARC from Jet City Comics via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*

Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Goodreads

Title: King #1

Author: Joshua Hale Fialkov
Illustrators: Bernard Chang and Marcelo Maiolo
Recent Release Date: August 19, 2015

Synopsis: King just wants what anybody wants: not to get fired, eaten, or forced to mate with a cheetah lady. For Earth’s sole human survivor after the apocalypse, life among Los Angeles’s strange new populace ain’t easy. Working for the LA Department of Reclamation, King gets a lot of crappy jobs going on quests and searching for artifacts from the “old world,” which can range from the mythical (Excalibur!) to the absurd (an iPod shuffle—which, let’s be honest, was a terrible, terrible invention). The commute can be a real pain in the asphalt, too; the 405 freeway is filled with mutants, monsters, mayhem, and tentacled Elder Gods. And that’s all before you hit the horrors of the San Fernando Valley. As the world’s freakish inhabitants battle for supremacy, King searches for the “seed of life,” which may give Earth the second chance it probably doesn’t even deserve.

------------------------------------------------------------

Review: This post-apocalyptic comic book starts with a Garfield reference. That pretty much sets the tone. This is not a pure gore or action comic. There's plenty of comedy, too. There was a cataclysmic event caused by aliens, gods, Primordial beings, and maybe more. The protagonist is the only human left on Earth.

There are a lot of great pop culture references, especially California ones. The 405 is even featured.

This is only the first issue, but it opens up an interesting world. It is outrageous and ridiculous, but in a completely intentional way. The comic book is the only medium that could pull off a story like this. I give this first issue of King a 3.5/5

Nobody's-Goddess-Cover

In a village of masked men, magic compels each man to love only one woman and to follow the commands of his “goddess” without question. A woman may reject the only man who will love her if she pleases, but she will be alone forever. And a man must stay masked until his goddess returns his love—and if she can’t or won’t, he remains masked forever.
Seventeen-year-old Noll isn't in the mood to celebrate. Her childhood friends have paired off and her closest companion, Jurij, found his goddess in Noll’s own sister. Desperate to find a way to break this ancient spell, Noll instead discovers why no man has ever chosen her.
Thus begins a dangerous game between the choice of woman versus the magic of man. And the stakes are no less than freedom and happiness, life and death—and neither is willing to lose.

TBAIK-Cover-v2

To Bear an Iron Key is the first in a new and exciting series from acclaimed author Jackie Morse Kessler.
Five years ago, the young witch Bromwyn refused a gift from the powerful fairy king. Tonight, on Midsummer, that decision comes back to haunt her. When her best friend Rusty picks the wrong pocket, he and Bromwyn are all that stand between their village and the rampaging fairies who have pushed through the World Door. If they cannot outwit the fairy king and queen before the World Door closes at sunrise, the friends will lose everything—their village, Bromwyn's magic, and Rusty's life.
From To Bear an Iron Key by Jackie Morse Kessler: "Bromwyn turned to face the burning fields. Reaching deep inside of herself, she closed her eyes and touched the core of her power, the place where her magic lived, where it connected her to all of Nature. She held onto that magic, let it fill her almost to the bursting point, and then she cast it out onto the fields. It blanketed the rows of spelt, and she felt as it rode the wind—Air—and then touched the grain—Earth—and then sizzled around the fire."

JMK

Jackie Morse Kessler grew up in Brooklyn, NY, with a cranky cat and overflowing shelves filled with dolls and books. Now she’s in Upstate NY with another cranky cat, a loving husband, two sons, and overflowing shelves filled with dragons and books (except when her sons steal her dragons). She has a bachelor’s degree in English and American Literature, and yet she’s never read any Jane Austen (with or without zombies). She also has a master’s degree in media ecology. (The living study of technology and culture. Which is cool, but she still can’t figure out how to use Tweetdeck.)
Jackie spends a lot of time writing, reading, and getting distracted by bright and shiny new ideas. (She just came up with a new idea right now.) She has a weakness for chocolate and a tendency to let her cat take over her office chair.

The-Emissary-Cover

For hundreds of years, dark clouds covered the skies of Adamah, and an ageless king ruled. Those who emerged with one of six extraordinary Shay powers were forced into the king’s army, an unmatched force with inhuman Strength, Speed, Accuracy, Perception, Empathy, and Healing. With the army behind him, the king—a man who wields all six abilities—was invincible and unquestioned in his rule. To most, serving the king was an honor. But for others, it was a fate worse than death.
When seventeen-year-old Nolan Trividar witnesses the transformation of his brother from kind to cruel after entering the king’s army, he vows never to follow the same path.

So when his own power—the Shay of Accuracy—comes upon him at the Tournament of Awakening, Nolan conceals his emergence instead of joining the king’s ranks. For years, he traitorously hides his power, pretending to be only a gifted scribe. But when Nolan comes face -to-face with a deserter, the man discovers his secret.

To evade detection and a death sentence, Nolan escapes with the deserter and flees into a night filled with dark creatures who steal both powers and souls. He joins a resistance, a village hidden deep in the forest, filled with others who secretly wield a Shay. But his peace is short-lived when they discover that the dark clouds, undead creatures, their own decreasing powers, and even the king, are all connected.

BREAKOUT Synopsis:

All hell is breaking loose in the edge-of-your-seat follow-up to Havoc and Perdition from New York Times bestselling author Ann Aguirre…

The prison ship Perdition has become a post-battle charnel house with only a handful of Dred’s soldiers still standing and now being hunted by Silence’s trained tongueless assassins. Forging an uneasy alliance with mercenary commander Vost—who is their only chance at escape—the Dread Queen will do whatever it takes to end her life sentence on Perdition and keep the survivors alive long enough to cobble together a transport capable of getting them off station.

If Dred and her crew can win the deadly game of cat and mouse, the payoff is not only life but freedom—a prize sweeter than their wildest dreams. Yet the sadistic Silence would rather destroy Perdition than let a single soul slip from her grasp…

Praise for the Dred Chronicles:

"There's so much action, so much adventure, and more than that, it's great writing."—USA Today

"SiranthaJax fans may be intrigued to see what befell Jael after his ill-considered actions there, and new lead Dred is a strong linchpin for a promising new series."—Publishers Weekly

"Spectacularly and spell-bindingly perfect with high octane action that keeps you on the edge of your seat and a romance that is surprisingly sweet and tender in a harsh and unforiving setting...This is honestly one of the best SF romance series I have read." —Book Pushers

They didn’t speak until they had put a fair amount of distance behind them, then Dred signaled her desire to pause by tapping his ankle. He couldn’t turn fully because the ducts had narrowed, but he glanced over his shoulder.

“You all right?”

“Just . . . spooked.” The somber tone told him he hadn’t been alone in what he felt, watching those crazy, tongue-less bastards.

“It’s different now,” he said.

“With what she did to Queensland . . . she seems larger than life. I’ve been afraid before, but . . . not quite like this.”

The words were barely a whisper, and they roused an answering prickle of gooseflesh on his arms.

“I know. There’s run-of-the-mill evil, like Priest and Mungo. And then there’s Silence.”

“It’s like she can do worse than kill me. Rationally, I know that’s not true—”

“But it’s uncanny the way she’s last one still standing, moving through the carnage.” He didn’t say it out loud, but he thought, Like Death itself.

Dred nodded. “I’m still here, too, but I’m not the Dread Queen anymore.”

“If it’s any consolation, I don’t miss her.”

“Me either,” she whispered.

There was no space to touch her as he wanted to, and it wasn’t the time anyway, so Jael continued on. They slid out of the ducts near the closet, but when he opened it, there were no droids plugged in. He choked out a curse. It was impossible to predict when a bot would come back, and it was dangerous to wait out in the open. They desperately needed some intel about how many men Silence had left, how often they patrolled, and where, but with manpower as scarce as it had become on their end, recon had to wait.

“Back up?” Dred whispered.

He nodded. This time, they found a way in that gave them vantage over their target, so they’d know when a bot returned. He’d just finished fitting the vent panel in place behind them when he heard the familiar, shuffling sound of Silence’s men. From her expression, Dred registered it, too, and she practically stopped breathing. The fact that her killers were roving freely must signify that she believed herself the undisputed ruler of Perdition.

When they rounded the corner and came into sight, he stifled a surprised sound. This group was huge, compared to the usual numbers, ten this time, and horror jolted through him like lightning when he realized they were carried a human-sized bundle. They’d wrapped their captive in dark fabric, so he couldn’t tell anything about the person, but the worst part was, he or she was still moving, thrashing against his bonds.

Who is that? And why the hell would Silence want someone taken alive?

And don’t miss the previous books in the Dred Chronicles!

Charles' Top Ten Superheroes

Full disclosure: Up until a few years ago, I had a collection of comic books that numbered in four figures, all neatly stored in pristine clear bags and acid-free white boards (I sold them to make room in my New York City apartment for my now one-year-old son). I also spent much of my teenage years reading science fiction and fantasy along with re-watching “Star Wars.” It turned out investing all that time and money wasn’t a waste – they became part of the inspiration for my new novel, “Strange Country Day,” a middle grade sports/fantasy/science fiction novel about a group of seventh graders who suddenly find out they have special abilities. So I’d like to share with you a list of my top ten favorite superheroes. Why mine? You’ve read enough lists that end with Superman at No. 1.

Feel free to reach out to me on Twitter @charlescurtis82 to discuss and debate!

1. Wolverine: What isn’t there to love? A fantastic power (super-fast healing), razor-sharp claws that pop up at the moment you know he’s about to kick butt, some of the best one-liners of all time and a murky origin story to add an air of mystery.  A near-perfect combination.

2. Luke Skywalker: Not a superhero, you say? Here’s a kid who turns out to have the powers of the Force and who is brave enough to take on a galactic empire. Works for me.

3. Jean Grey: You’ll notice some similarities in “Strange Country Day” to the X-Men, my absolute all-time favorite series. That’s no coincidence. I especially loved Jean Grey, whose telepathy and telekinesis were awe-inspiring, but who had the greatest character arcs (she died and was reborn for crying out loud!) of any superhero.

4. Batman: An obvious choice. Who doesn’t love the tale of a really strong, really rich, really smart superhero with the best gadgets his endless cash can buy?

5. Spider-Man: Another obvious choice, but he’s especially close to my heart because he’s a fellow journalist.

6. Doctor Manhattan: “Watchmen” isn’t just a comic book series, it’s a piece of literary fiction. And the god-like being at the center of it is one of those rich, intricate, once-in-a-lifetime characters whose unique perspective (he can see the past, present and future simultaneously) becomes a commentary on human life.

7. Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law: I spent a lot of time in college watching and re-watching early animated Adult Swim shows like this one, which transformed Hanna-Barbera cartoons into sarcastic, side-splitting dark comedies with a bizarre sense of humors. The voice actors included Gary Cole and some guy named Stephen Colbert.

8. Ninjak: I was so blown away by the cover of Ninjak No. 1 that I became a stuttering fanboy when I met the artist, Joe Quesada, who is now an executive at Marvel Comics. Just look at it and tell me it doesn’t belong in a museum. Oh, and as for the superhero himself, I don’t remember anything about him. But the cover is just that amazing that he belongs on this list.

9. The Terminator (AKA: T-800): No special powers here except for being a really, ridiculously cool time-traveling cyborg in human clothing (and skin) that helps fight the Resistance. A different kind of superhero whose story had a huge influence on me as a teenager.

10. The Incredibles: “Strange Country Day” focuses on some of the same themes: How hard is it to be a parent of a kid with special abilities? Can a teenager lead a “normal” life with powers? This legendary Pixar flick did it first.

So, who is your favorite superhero? Let us know in the comments!
