Shutter by Courtney Alameda - Ashley's Review

*I received a copy of this book as an eARC from Macmillan Children's Publishing Group/Feiwel & Friends on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*

Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Goodreads

Title: Shutter
Author: Courtney Alameda
Publication Date: February 3rd, 2015

Synopsis: Horror has a new name: introducing Courtney Alameda.

Micheline Helsing is a tetrachromat—a girl who sees the auras of the undead in a prismatic spectrum. As one of the last descendants of the Van Helsing lineage, she has trained since childhood to destroy monsters both corporeal and spiritual: the corporeal undead go down by the bullet, the spiritual undead by the lens. With an analog SLR camera as her best weapon, Micheline exorcises ghosts by capturing their spiritual energy on film. She's aided by her crew: Oliver, a techno-whiz and the boy who developed her camera's technology; Jude, who can predict death; and Ryder, the boy Micheline has known and loved forever.

When a routine ghost hunt goes awry, Micheline and the boys are infected with a curse known as a soulchain. As the ghostly chains spread through their bodies, Micheline learns that if she doesn't exorcise her entity in seven days or less, she and her friends will die. Now pursued as a renegade agent by her monster-hunting father, Leonard Helsing, she must track and destroy an entity more powerful than anything she's faced before . . . or die trying.

Lock, stock, and lens, she’s in for one hell of a week.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Review: I am always on the hunt for a good horror book. Paranormal books are usually either hit or miss for me, but if it's a horror book and not a romance, I'll definitely give it a try. Courtney Alameda's Shutter is actually some of both, although definitely more horror than romance, and I loved pretty much every minute of it!

One of my favorite things in any sort of book is when there's a little bit of history or mythology tucked in around the main story. In this case, we have the Van Helsing lineage. The Helsings have built an empire on hunting ghosts, ghouls, and other sorts of undead creatures, and are known far and wide. I loved that little bit of a connection to the real world, because it made everything that happens in Shutter seem like something that could possibly actually happen. I mean, I know there aren't ghosts and undead monsters roaming around (at least I hope not...), but Alameda did such a good job constructing a world where all of that felt so real that it seemed like they've always been real in our world too.

And speaking of those monsters, Alameda's descriptions of them are just absolutely terrifying. I made the mistake of reading this book at night, and spent the next week wishing I had read it in the middle of the day. I could never go into something like Micheline and her crew, hunting the monsters they do. Corporeal or spiritual, those are things I would never want to run across. The deaths and corpses are all described in gruesome detail, and even though it was kind of gross, I think it added so much to my understanding of the world Micheline lives in and the monsters she deals with.

Micheline is a really fantastic heroine. She is strong-willed and independant, a natural leader, but she still relies heavily on her friends. She makes some poor choices, but Jude, Ryder, and Oliver all have her back and help to protect her. Even dealing with the soulchain, they never really give up on finding a way out of it or on each other. Jude was probably my favorite - he's hilarious and you could pretty much always count on him to break up a serious moment with some ridiculous or sarcastic comment. But I also really loved Ryder and his relationship with Micheline. There's definitely a romance brewing there, but it's not overwhelming and doesn't take over the main story. It's just nice to see things play out the way they do.

There's also quite a bit of science in this book - ghosts and the tech Micheline uses are explained using energies and the like, and how the quartz-lens even works, and so many other things that add a whole extra dimension to the whole paranormal aspect. Overall, this was just a really fantastic, well-written book that has likeable characters, terrifying monsters, and some of the best world-building I've ever seen in a horror book. I would definitely recommend this one to fans of the Anna Dressed in Blood series. 5/5!

Mortal Danger (Immortal Game #1) by Ann Aguirre - Ashley's Pre-Reading

*I received this book as an eARC from Macmillan Children's Publishing Group/Feiwel & Friends on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*

Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Goodreads

Title: Mortal Danger (Immortal Game #1)
Author: Ann Aguirre
Publication Date: August 5, 2014

Synopsis: Revenge is a dish best served cold.

Edie Kramer has a score to settle with the beautiful people at Blackbriar Academy. Their cruelty drove her to the brink of despair, and four months ago, she couldn't imagine being strong enough to face her senior year. But thanks to a Faustian compact with the enigmatic Kian, she has the power to make the bullies pay. She's not supposed to think about Kian once the deal is done, but devastating pain burns behind his unearthly beauty, and he's impossible to forget.

In one short summer, her entire life changes, and she sweeps through Blackbriar, prepped to take the beautiful people down from the inside. A whisper here, a look there, and suddenly... bad things are happening. It's a heady rush, seeing her tormentors get what they deserve, but things that seem too good to be true usually are, and soon, the pranks and payback turns from delicious to deadly. Edie is alone in a world teeming with secrets and fiends lurking in the shadows. In this murky morass of devil's bargains, she isn't sure who—or what--she can trust. Not even her own mind...

Why?: I really enjoyed Ann's Razorland series (at least what I've read so far), so I was really excited when I heard about this book. It sounds like something totally different from Enclave, and I think that it has a lot of potential to be really great. Also, a Faustian deal, revenge, secrets, and fiends? Count me in!

Expectations: I expect this book to be pretty intense. Edie is on a mission for revenge, and that never usually ends well. Or nicely. I have pretty high expectations overall for this book, especially since I've read and enjoyed some of Ann's other YA books. I'm hoping for a fast-paced thriller with some magic and a little romance maybe!

Judging a book by its cover: I absolutely love this cover. It's simple, yet powerful. The infinity symbol could mean so many things, and I like how this book about revenge has a cover that looks like it's splattered with blood. I mean, not that blood is ever a good way to take revenge... but it makes for a really cool looking cover. I would totally pick this book up off of a shelf based on just the cover. I can't wait to have a copy for my shelves!

Of Triton (Of Poseidon #2) by Anna Banks - Paul's Review

Title: Of Triton (Of Poseidon #2)
Author: Anna Banks
Year Published: 2013

My PRE READING
My REVIEW of Of Poseidon
Ashley's REVIEW of Of Poseidon

Synopsis: In this sequel to Of Poseidon, Emma has just learned that her mother is a long-lost Poseidon princess, and now struggles with an identity crisis: As a Half-Breed, she’s a freak in the human world and an abomination in the Syrena realm below. Syrena law states that all Half-Breeds should be put to death.

As if that’s not bad enough, her mother’s reappearance among the Syrena turns the two kingdoms—Poseidon and Triton—against one another. Which leaves Emma with a decision to make: Should she comply with Galen’s request to keep herself safe and just hope for the best? Or should she risk it all and reveal herself—and her Gift—to save a people she’s never known?

Review: I really enjoyed this sequel. I'm glad we got to learn more about the Syrena. We also got to meet a lot more of them. I enjoyed seeing them all especially Grom and the Archives.

Just like the first book, I was surprised by how sad certain chapters were. Although, the book is mostly a light fun read. I had to leave my degree in marine biology behind yet again and just accept the world Banks created.

There are a lot of parallels to current civil rights issues. The same arguments used in the book could be used today. Or during the Civil Rights Movement. All people should be accepted as people, no matter their differences.

I am very excited for the sequel. Mountains? I give this book a 4/5. If you read Of Poseidon, you should definitely pick this up.

Why?:  I enjoyed Of Poseidon. It was a light and fun read and it left me craving more. I want to learn more about Emma's mother. I am also intrigued by the half breeds. And I want more of the Syrena.

Expectations: I expect another light fun read. I'm hoping the world will be expanded more and we will learn new things. Since this book is called Of Triton, maybe we will see the Gift of Triton.

Judging a book by its cover:  The cover has a similar feel to the first book. They aren't anything special to me. I think there are many similar covers out there.

The Stranger (Of Poseidon #0.6) by Anna Banks - Ashley's Review

Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Goodreads | Tor.com

Title: The Stranger
Author: Anna Banks
Year Published: 2013

My Of Poseidon Pre-Reading
My Legacy Lost Review

Synopsis: The Syrena don’t trust many humans. Rachel is one of them. The story of how Galen met her – and how they bonded -- is both exciting and heartbreaking.

------------------------------------------

Review: I really hope Anna Banks keeps this short stories coming because she does an excellent job taking a little back story and telling it in such a way that it makes you feel like you really get to know these minor characters. Legacy Lost was an intriguing and heartbreaking look into Nalia and Grom's past, and this story about Rachel will tug on your heartstrings just as much.

This story takes place somewhere in between Legacy Lost and Of Poseidon, and gives us a glimpse into how Galen and Rachel forged their partnership. From reading Of Poseidon, we get an idea of what happens, but I really enjoyed seeing what actually went down on the island and watching Galen, Rayna, and Toraf start to trust a human. Although Rachel and Galen are the main focus of this story, I think it really helps give more depth to all four characters and helps strengthen some of the relationships.

We already know quite a bit about the world, so there's not really as much world building as before, but we do learn a little bit more about how Grom and the other Syrena view humans, and we get to see more of why Galen wants to be the ambassador between the humans and the Syrena. He makes friends easily regardless of species, and I feel like there's definitely a moral in there somewhere. We still don't know a lot about Rachel, but I still enjoyed learning more about her past and how she ends up working with Galen after he saves her.

I definitely recommend this story to anyone who has read any of the other books or stories in the Of Poseidon series! It will give you warm fuzzies and all of the feels, and I think it really helps get to know some of the characters. And it's also available to read for free on Tor's website (at the link above)! So really, you've got nothing to lose ;). A 4/5 on this little novellette!

Legacy Lost (Of Poseidon #0.5) by Anna Banks - Ashley's Review

Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Goodreads | Tor.com

Title: Legacy Lost
Author: Anna Banks
Year Published: 2012

Synopsis:
He is a mer-prince, she is the mermaid princess that his family orders him to marry so that their kingdoms unite. Grom dreads this arrangement, until he meets Nalia — both beautiful and smart, she's everything he ever wanted. But just when their connection grows deeper, tragedy strikes.

Legacy Lost is a prequel story to Anna Banks' debut novel, Of Poseidon.

-----------------------------------------

Review: As I was reading Of Poseidon, I kept finding myself wondering about Nalia. What was she like before the mines? What was her and Grom's relationship like? Were they friends from childhood? How did Grom survive the mines when Nalia didn't? And then I discovered this short story, and I was so excited that I might get the answers to most, or all, of my questions!

I really enjoyed getting to know Nalia and Grom, and seeing more of the Syrena world. Since most of Of Poseidon takes place among the humans, we only get small glimpses into the world of the Syrena. In this story though, we get to see much more of the politics and why they act the way they do. Even though it's a short story, the world building is actually really great and answered questions I didn't even know I had.

It was also really interesting to see what Nalia was like. She definitely reminds me of someone else, and I think reading Of Poseidon first made this story that much better. Grom also reminds me a lot of Galen, and it's really neat to see what he was like before the tragedy and before his two younger siblings came around. He's definitely a totally different person, and I wish he still had some of that spunk. Or at least showed it a little more.

Although this can definitely be read before, as a prequel and a glimpse into the world, reading it after Of Poseidon gives more depth to both stories. If you've read and enjoyed any of the books in the Of Poseidon series, I highly recommend this story! If you haven't started the series yet, this could definitely be a good place to get your feet wet. There's love and loss and a fantasy world. Plus, you can read it free online (at the Tor.com link above)! A 4/5 on this little story!

Enclave (Razorland #1) by Ann Aguirre - Ashley's Review

Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Goodreads

Title: Enclave
Author: Ann Aguirre
Year Published: 2011

My Pre-Reading

Synopsis:
In Deuce’s world, people earn the right to a name only if they survive their first fifteen years. By that point, each unnamed ‘brat’ has trained into one of three groups–Breeders, Builders, or Hunters, identifiable by the number of scars they bear on their arms. Deuce has wanted to be a Huntress for as long as she can remember.

As a Huntress, her purpose is clear—to brave the dangerous tunnels outside the enclave and bring back meat to feed the group while evading ferocious monsters known as Freaks. She’s worked toward this goal her whole life, and nothing’s going to stop her, not even a beautiful, brooding Hunter named Fade. When the mysterious boy becomes her partner, Deuce’s troubles are just beginning.

Down below, deviation from the rules is punished swiftly and harshly, and Fade doesn't like following orders. At first Deuce thinks he’s crazy, but as death stalks their sanctuary, and it becomes clear the elders don’t always know best, Deuce wonders if Fade might be telling the truth. Her partner confuses her; she’s never known a boy like him before, as prone to touching her gently as using his knives with feral grace.

As Deuce’s perception shifts, so does the balance in the constant battle for survival. The mindless Freaks, once considered a threat only due to their sheer numbers, show signs of cunning and strategy… but the elders refuse to heed any warnings. Despite imminent disaster, the enclave puts their faith in strictures and sacrifice instead. No matter how she tries, Deuce cannot stem the dark tide that carries her far from the only world she’s ever known.
--------------------------------------

Review: This book surprised me - I was not expecting to fall in love with it as much and as quickly as I did. I knew it was a dystopian book with a strong female main character, but I had no idea what else was in store for me. From the beginning to the end, this book had me hook, line, and sinker.

Although it takes a few chapters for the plot to actually get moving, the set up and background information is still very interesting on its own. I never felt like things were moving too slowly or that there was too much information. The pacing and the detail were absolutely perfect for what was happening. And then, as Deuce learns more about College and the politics behind it, we're thrown into a crazy adventure that keeps throwing more and more surprises at you. I felt like I was right there with Deuce and Fade and the new friends they meet along the way, and I was scared for them most of the time.

Because aside from the crumbling enclave, there are also the Freaks to worry about. We don't know much about them except that they will eat anything they can except other living Freaks and are pretty slow and stupid. Or at least, they used to be. They kind of have a zombie feel about them, which I loved. I'm kind of on a zombie kick right now, so that was a really pleasant surprise. I just really enjoy how many different variations of zombies there are, and Aguirre manages to take a well known pop culture phenomenon and make it something totally her own. So major props on that.

Like The Hunger Games, this is a very dark dystopian book (although that's really where the similarities end). We're presented with some very depressing topics, like death and exile and rape, among other things, and I think it's interesting to see how Deuce deals with them. She's very strong, and she's taught that the strong survive her entire life, so I can see how she wouldn't understand how someone would "allow" themselves to be subjected to the things Tegan is subjected too. Deuce is very narrow-minded, and she grows so much over the course of the book, and has so much more growing to do. I'm excited to see how she changes further over the rest of the series.

I also really loved Fade. I'm not sure the romance aspect was set up very well, but I think it eventually worked. I really wish we had the opportunity to see in Fade's mind in this book, but at the same time I don't know that it would have been an effective approach. He's strong, but he's also been hurt, and he kind of hides inside himself whenever things don't go exactly like he thinks they should. I think that makes him very real, and I definitely found myself wanting to give him a big hug whenever he seemed upset.

All in all, I absolutely loved this book. The plot and the characters and just everything about it made this exactly the kind of story I've been looking for. I would most definitely recommend it to fans of The Hunger Games and Divergent series, and to anyone who enjoys YA dystopians in general. It's dark and scary at times, so I wouldn't recommend it to a younger audience though. I can't wait to read more of the Razorland series, and will be getting my hands on Outpost and Horde ASAP. A 5/5 for Enclave!

Endurance (Razorland #1.5) by Ann Aguirre - Ashley's Review

Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Goodreads

Title: Endurance

Author: Ann Aguirre
Year Published: 2012

Synopsis: When rebellion destroys the underground world in which Thimble and Stone have grown up, they take Stone’s son and try to escape the chaos. Along the way, they must evade the Freaks, beings who feed on human flesh. Leaving behind the roles of Builder and Breeder which they were assigned at birth, they wander the underground tunnels, looking for safety yet afraid to go “topside” where legend has it that the light and water will burn their skin from their bones.

Their journey takes them upward to an unimagined world of tinned food, comfortable furniture, and books. Away from their regimented society for the first time, and still facing imminent danger, Thimble and Stone acknowledge the forbidden attraction which both have denied for years.

------------------------------------------

Review: I'm such a sucker for short stories about minor characters, and this one was definitely no exception. Like Deuce, I wondered what happened to Thimble and Stone after Deuce and Fade leave the enclave. Did the Freaks attack and take over College? Did Thimble and Stone survive? Did they even know that Deuce lied for Stone? This story answered all my questions and even gave me answers to questions I didn't even know I had!

I really liked that the chapters went back and forth between Stone and Thimble, and that we get to see the rebellion from both of their perspectives. We also get to see how they finally come to accept and admit their feelings for each other, and the little bit of romance included in this story was actually nice. Both characters have their strengths, and I enjoyed learning about how they were able to play off of each other and survive.

Hopefully we get to learn more about Stone and Thimble, and Robin too!, because I still want to know what happens to them after the end of this story. I love this world and the characters and the story and everything, and I can't wait to read more. I would give this story a 4/5 and recommend it to anyway who has read any of the Razorland series.

Why?:
I love dystopian novels, and I've been wanting to read this book for a while now. A strong female protagonist, adventure, a little bit of romance, imminent disaster and a futuristic dystopian world set around New York? Count me in! I can't believe I haven't read this yet.

Expectations: I expect an adventure with some romance, mystery, and danger thrown in. I've heard so many good things about this series, so I have pretty high expectations for it.

Judging a book by its cover: This cover kind of looks like something you'd see on a TMNT advertisement, so I'm totally ok with that. It's shiny too, so I'd probably pick it up if I saw it on a shelf somewhere. It doesn't really give too much away about the book either, so I'm intrigued.

The Queen's Army by Marissa Meyer - Ashley's Review

Read it free here: http://www.tor.com/stories/2012/11/the-queens-army

Title: The Queen's Army
Author: Marissa Meyer
Year Published: 2012

Synopsis: It is time. The boy must leave his family to serve in the Queen’s army. To be chosen is an honor. To decline is impossible. The boy is modified. He is trained for several years, and learns to fight to the death. He proves to the Queen -- and to himself -- that he is capable of evil. He is just the kind of soldier the Queen wants: the alpha of his pack.

I'm so glad that I read this before I read Scarlet. It was really nice to find out about some of the characters in Scarlet before they make an appearance, and to find out why they act the way they do. Plus, it's also a little bit of a continuation from Cinder - we know Levena is up to something and is creating an army of genetically modified soldiers, but we have no idea why or what they are.

I really loved seeing the way Ze'ev interacted with his "pack" and how he develops over the course of the story. He's smarter than he pretends to be, and a better fighter than he lets on, but he doesn't want to be the Alpha. I think it's fairly important to learn about Z before we see him in Scarlet, because it certainly helps explain a little bit about his mentally and why he does the things he does.

Marissa Meyers' short stories do not disappoint, and I would strongly recommend this to fans of her Lunar Chronicles series. Especially if you haven't read Scarlet yet! And even if you have, I think this is still an excellent read and will really open your eyes a little bit more. 5/5, and I hope there are more short stories to go along with Cress and Winter!
