Author Bio

Majanka Verstraete begged her Mom to teach her how to read while she was still in kindergarten. By the time she finished fifth grade, she had read through the entire children’s section of her hometown library. She wrote her first story when she was seven years old, and hasn’t stopped writing since. With an imagination that never sleeps, and hundreds of possible book characters screaming for her attention, writing is more than a passion for her. She writes about all things supernatural for children of all ages. She’s tried to write contemporary novels before, but something paranormal always manages to crawl in. Majanka is currently studying for her Master of Laws degree, and hopes one day to be able to combine her passions for law and writing. When she’s not writing, reading or studying, she likes watching “The Vampire Diaries” and “Game of Thrones,” spending time with her friends, or playing “World of Warcraft.”

Descending the stone stairs of the tower, I shove all thoughts of Jeremy aside. When I crash out into the courtyard, I see her. It’s like running into a wall. It stops me dead in my tracks, seeing my sister for the first time since she betrayed me.

She’s dressed in dark, sturdy leather, and her skin is the color of the spidering ice beneath her. Her shoulders are back—the slump she’d held herself in over so many years ironed away by defiance. There’s a new strength about her that I can’t quite pin, and when Michael reaches out to touch her, a roaring begins in my ears. I’ll cut his fingers off one by one. Then maybe I’ll feed them to the birds.

The wind tosses Pen’s hair across her face for a moment before I can see her more clearly. She’s dark and deadly, her eyes bright and her weapons at the ready. All of her muscles are poised to strike at anything that comes near her, and I drink in the picture of my warrior sister. This is who I always wanted her to be: a fighter, forged from iron and bathed in blood. She could rule Hell by my side. If others saw this version of her, they’d understand.

But no one’s seen this rendering of Pen. They saw the weak girl splashed with ink. The small demon who ducked her head and spoke to herself too often. They see a traitor, a coward, an angel-lover.

I want to kill her. I want to save her.

I don’t know which one will win out tonight.

Ashley's Review

Ashley's reviews of Ignite, Entice, and Incite

You guys. THIS BOOK. I mean, I loved the rest of this series. Everything about the story and Erica's gorgeous way with words made Pen, Azael, Michael, and the other characters come alive and jump out of the pages. I always felt like I was right in the middle of their world and the battle, and I often feared for their lives as if I had known these characters all my life. I am SO sad this series is over, although I'm content with where things are now.

I went into this book pretty much knowing that Erica was going to basically just break my heart in every single way possible. I mean, it wouldn't be right if I read one of her books and didn't cry big, ugly tears at least once (see Madly, Deeply). There's Gus' prophecy hanging around, that Pen and Azael will destroy each other. And then there's crazy Lilith, who keeps throwing a wrench in the bucket and making things so, so strange and weird and wonderful. I really enjoyed reading sections from Lilith's point of view, especially knowing things she knows that Pen and Azael don't yet. I love having more information than the characters and watching things unfold.

Don't get me wrong - I love seeing things from the conflicting viewpoints of Pen and Azael. I mean, Pen just wants everyone to have the option to make their own choices and Azael just wants to be the king of Hell and rescue his sister from the crazy angels. But there's so much more beneath all of that, and it was such a thrill to be along for the ride on both sides. And Lilith... she's all over the place and doesn't give two craps about what anyone else does as long as it benefits her. I thought Pen was a great female lead - smart and strong-willed and always looking for the good in people, yet still with her vices and weaknesses and just so very real. But Lilith is power-hungry and willing to do whatever it takes to claw her way to the top. I mean, you go girl! But maybe slow down a little bit, you crazy woman.

Although I have wanted a happy ending for Pen and Michael, and even Az, from the very beginning, I kind of always figured in the back of my mind that things were not going to work out for everyone and someone was going to get screwed in this whole war and my heart would be in a bazillion pieces all over the floor. I don't want to give anything away, but I ended up in an okay place by the end of the epilogue. It wasn't what I was hoping for, and it wasn't what I was expecting at all, but Erica made it work. And I was able to put myself back together a little bit, so that was a bonus.

All of the supporting cast is fantastic too, and I never felt like anyone was superfluous or just there to be killed off or anything. Erica somehow manages to give every single character a well-rounded story and makes them important to Pen, Az, and Michael. Kala and Ana and Eligor, and all of the other angels and demons in New Genesis, and even Az's group of demons all had their purposes and their places, and were all very true to themselves throughout the entire book (actually, the whole series).

So, TL;DR, you need this book in your life. Now. If you haven't read Ignite or Incite yet, or either of the novellas, go get them ASAP so that you can read Infinite. I'd say that anyone who loves paranormal books with a romance that's important but not overwhelming should definitely read these books, but really anyone who enjoys a great story with amazing characters and absolutely wonderful world building should pick up this series RIGHT NOW. Erica is incredible, and I can't wait to find out what she's got up her sleeves next! 5/5, but I'd give it higher if I could!

Few Are Chosen by Storm Grant - Paul's REVIEW

***I was provided an ecopy via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review***

Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Goodreads

Title: Few are Chosen
Author: Storm Grant
Year Published: 2012

Synopsis: Apprentice warrior Blake St. Blake is the Chosen One, raised by an ancient order to defend the world against evil. Well, maybe not the whole world, but at least his neighborhood in downtown Detroit. When a dreaded reflux demon is sighted in a local cemetery, Blake is sent off to his very first battle, armed with his sword, his super-senses, his black leather duster, and a few well-rehearsed one-liners.

But another Chosen One gets in Blake’s way—an apprentice wizard named Shadow. While the boys argue about who’s the more chosen of the two, the demon escapes.

Blake wants to be angry, but it turns out he and Shadow have a lot in common. Besides, Shadow’s pretty cute, and Blake can’t help but think that the wizard’s skills (and hands and lips and other bits) might make the perfect complement to his. Blake and Shadow are brave enough to challenge the reflux demon in a second battle, but will they have the courage to tell each other how they feel?

Review: I liked the concept of this novella. It is cool to see gay characters take the lead in a paranormal fantasy novel. Unfortunately, it did not meet my expectations. It was done very basic and didn't turn out to be that unique. There are many cliches, but you should go into reading this knowing it is very lighthearted.

Maybe this is just because the story is so short, but I didn't feel this story was fully fledged out. I have read short stories that had a lot more depth that this 45 page story. The dialogue was bad. There were many awkward moments. And I wanted more romance. There was sex, but not romance.

I give this novella a 2/5. I think it has a lot of potential and I would be interested in seeing this world, story, and its characters fully fledged out. These 45 pages just did not do it for me.

My Pre-Reading

Synopsis:
A dark, romantic fantasy set against the backdrop of San Francisco devastated by the Great Quake.

It is the dawn of a new century in San Francisco and Delia Martin is a wealthy young woman whose life appears ideal. But a dark secret colors her life, for Delia’s most loyal companions are ghosts, as she has been gifted (or some would say cursed) with an ability to peer across to the other side.

Since the great quake rocked her city in 1906, Delia has been haunted by an avalanche of the dead clamoring for her help. Delia flees to the other side of the continent, hoping to gain some peace. After several years in New York, Delia believes she is free…until one determined specter appears and she realizes that she must return to the City by the Bay in order to put this tortured soul to rest.

It will not be easy, as the ghost is only one of the many victims of a serial killer who was never caught. A killer who after thirty years is killing again.

And who is now aware of Delia’s existence.

-------------------------------------------------------

Review: You know when you love a book so much that you just can't into words how you feel about it? Yeah. That's this book. I mean, I knew it was going to be dark and have romance and ghosts and a serial killer, but it just blew me away how well everything is woven together. I felt all of the feels in this book, and it was absolutely wonderful.

Ghost stories have been done before. Some people can see ghosts, others can't. People are haunted by certain ghosts. But somehow Jaime manages to take this popular plot and turn it into something completely different. Delia's ghost, her Shadow if you will, wants something from her. So badly, in fact, that she traveled across the country to get Delia back to San Francisco. I loved how her story is intertwined with Delia's and her friends' stories. There are so many little details that I didn't pick up on until later that made me realize just how ridiculously connected everything is.

The mystery part, to me, felt like it was split into two segments. First, who is Shadow and what happened to her? Then, once we figure that out, the mystery becomes finding out who the serial killer is. Although both have several twists and are not immediately obvious, I do think the first was more shocking than the second. It took me a little longer to figure out all the twists with the first one, and I was surprised when information was revealed. I thought the romance part was done very well too - Sadie & Jack's story is super sweet and I love them together, and Delia & Gabe's budding romance begins slowly and reluctantly and evolves as the two become better and better friends. Nothing happens too quickly, and if things progress a little fast it's always explained well.

I'm still not really used to switching perspectives and switching narration styles at the same time, so it took me a little while to get into the transitions from Delia's first person to Gabe's third person. I think it works very well in this book, but it's just very jarring the first couple of times. I think Gabe's sections helped give a more complete picture of all of the characters, since we view them from an outside source, but I really liked being inside Delia's mind and seeing the ghosts as she saw them and feeling the things she felt. I don't think it would have worked if we had been outside of Delia's mind, since I don't think I would have been so completely immersed in the whole ghost experience.

I really just loved everything about this book, and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a dark, gritty, romance full of mystery and ghosts. I would NOT recommend this to a younger audience though, because there is a lot of blood and death and gruesome descriptions of how the victims were tortured before they died. So anyone with a weak stomach should probably avoid this book as well. This book reminded me quite a bit of Something Strange and Deadly by Susan Dennard, so I think fans of that series would also enjoy this one. A 5/5 from me, and I can't wait for the sequel!

Delia's Shadow by Jaime Lee Moyer - Ashley's Pre-Reading

*I received this book as an eARC from Macmillan/Tor-Forge on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*

Title: Delia's Shadow

Synopsis:
A dark, romantic fantasy set against the backdrop of San Francisco devastated by the Great Quake

It is the dawn of a new century in San Francisco and Delia Martin is a wealthy young woman whose life appears ideal. But a dark secret colors her life, for Delia’s most loyal companions are ghosts, as she has been gifted (or some would say cursed) with an ability to peer across to the other side.

It will not be easy, as the ghost is only one of the many victims of a serial killer who was never caught. A killer who after thirty years is killing again.

And who is now aware of Delia’s existence.

Why?: Umm... hello! Paranormal fantasy set in 1906 San Francisco only a few years after a tremendous natural disaster? With ghosts and a serial killer and a girl who can stop one by listening to the others? This sounds like my type of book! I've heard so many good things about this already, so I can't wait to dive right in.

Expectations: Definitely mystery and ghosts and an exciting story colored with elements of the Victorian era. Even though this is only Moyer's debut novel, I've already heard so many excellent things that my expectations are pretty high. Plus, there are some pretty fantastic ghost stories out there that I've already read, and I really want this one to measure up to those.

Judging a book by its cover: This cover reminds me of the cover for the Something Strange and Deadly books, and I kind of love it. Her dress is not quite as extravagant, but I like the dark colors and how shadow-y it looks. It's very fitting! And, since it isn't just a close up of a girl's face and doesn't look like your typical YA cover, I would most likely pick it up off a shelf. I love how the lettering stands out against the dark background too.
