Review: RaShelle's Blood and Snow world is a lot of fun, and I love that she keeps expanding it with more classic fairy tale characters. I really enjoyed the first volume in this series, Asha's Kisses, so I jumped on the chance to read Asha's Curse!

Where Asha's Kisses was just enough to introduce Asha, her friends, and her situation, Asha's Curse picks up shortly after Asha and Lawson start dating. We get to learn more about Asha and her curse, and I really enjoyed seeing how RaShelle incorporated the classic elements of the Sleeping Beauty story into her world. The basics are there - Asha has been cursed to die by a fairy who is pissed at her parents. Instead of being pricked by a spinning wheel though, Asha will die by being stabbed through the heart. So things are a little more intense here.

There's also a little bit more development in the area of the relationships in this volume. Merida and Tiana end up with boyfriends, and Asha and Lawson are getting along pretty well. There's a lot I like about Lawson, but I'm still not entirely convinced about their relationship. I mean, as long as they're hapy it's all good, but with all of this curse stuff going on, I'm a little wary that Asha hasn't trusted him with any of this information though. I can understand that he might not believe her, but still.

And then we have Paxton. He just appears out of nowhere, and he seems pretty sketchy to me. I've learned in the Blood and Snow world never to trust anyone who just appears and take their word at face value, so I'm really interested in finding out what his true intentions are! I hope we find out more about him in Asha's Curse.

If you've read Asha's Kisses, you definitely want to read this volume! If you're new to RaShelle's Blood and Snow world, you could jump right in with Asha's Kisses - the stories, although connected, still stand well enough on their own. Some characters and places cross back and forth, but the story itself is unique to this series. I'd give this one a 4/5, and I can't wait for the next volume!

Asha's Kisses (Ever After #1) by RaShelle Workman - Ashley's Review

*I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*

Amazon | Goodreads

Title: Asha's Kisses: The Ever After Series Volume One (Blood & Snow)
Author: RaShelle Workman
Publication Date:  February 14, 2015
Genre: Reinvented Fairy Tale

Synopsis: Volume One in this new Ever After series that retells the story of Sleeping Beauty and takes place in the BLOOD AND SNOW world.

“By day’s end on her eighteenth birthday, she will be stabbed through the heart… and die!” ~ Mizrabel

Seventeen-year-old Asha has always preferred to stay out of the spotlight, but during a rehearsal for her high school's rendition of Romeo and Juliet she realizes that starring in the right kind of role might be better than she thought.

Series Summary: Cursed as a baby by a malevolent sorceress, Asha is left without the protection of her fairy magic. Her parents, fearing for their daughter’s safety, enlist the help of their three most trusted guards—who whisk Asha into the human world under a blanket of magic.

For nearly eighteen years Asha has lived as a normal human, doted on by her three aunts.

Without magic.
Without her parents.
And, without the knowledge of her curse.

But that’s about to change.

One night, a few weeks before graduation, Asha decides to disobey her aunts’ rules and go to a party. When she arrives, there’s a bonfire, lots of beer, and a mysterious guy named Paxton. No one seems to know who he is. Asha can’t stop staring at him. He’s everything her aunts have told her to stay away from.

When Paxton saves her from the overzealous actions of a drunken classmate, their lives become inexplicably intertwined. His touch rouses more than her desire for him. It awakens her long-hidden magic.

Review: RaShelle's Blood and Snow books are really fascinating to me. I love the way she takes classic fairy tales and manipulates them into something new and exciting. When I found out that the next fairy tale princess she would be tackling was Sleeping Beauty, I knew I had to get my hands on the books ASAP!

Asha's Kisses is a short prequel story that introduces us to Asha. She's your typical high school girl with a crush on the attractive, popular guy. Since he's in the popular crowd and she's not, her crush was just a fantasy. Until one day, during a rehearsal for the school play, when her dreams become a reality. And then everything changes.

I really enjoyed that this story was just enough to get your feet wet. We get to see Asha interact with her aunts and her best friends (Tiana and Merida, I can't wait to see what RaShelle eventually has in store for them too!), and I thought it was a lot of fun. Asha's aunties are wacky, and they totally reminded me of the fairies in Maleficent. I have so many questions about the characters now (how did Asha end up living with her aunties, anyway?), and it excites me that there's so much mystery around most of them.

This volume has very little magic in it, which worked out ok since this is basically an introduction to the new characters. There's a little hint of what's to come, and it definitely left me wanting more. I need to know what the curse is, how Asha came to live in the human world, what type of magic she has or has been cursed by, and who her parents are!

RaShelle has a fantastic way with these fairy tales, and I love how all of the volumes in the Blood and Snow world are so interconnected. I am really looking forward to finding out more about Asha and how she and her friends and family are a part  of the world RaShelle has already established, and how her story adds more depth and excitement to that world. I would recommend this to anyone who is a fan of reimagined fairy tales, especially if you're familiar with RaShelle's other Blood and Snow books. And even if you aren't, you can jump right in with Asha's Kisses and it will be fine! A 4/5, and I can't wait for the next volume in this series!

Disguised as a boy, she enlists the help of the handsome but also cursed Prince Niklaas to fight legions of evil and free her brother from the ogre queen who stole Aurora's throne ten years ago.

------------------------------------------------------------

Review: I can't get enough of both fairy tale retellings and epic YA fantasy with awesome world building. This book is both, although its connection to a fairy tale is pretty loose. It is more connected to the original Sleeping Beauty that had ogres, but I am not as familiar with it as I am with the Disney-fied version that's fed to all of as as children. This book makes me want to delve into the original Sleeping Beauty tale, which it seems Jay was faithful to. Aurora is Sleeping Beauty's daughter in this book, which was confusing for me at first since Princess Aurora IS Sleeping Beauty in the Disney film. I advise doing a little research into the original tale before reading this book, but the book stands alone if you do not.

This book reminds me of Ella Enchanted. The protagonist is fairy-blessed, but like all magic, the good comes with the bad. Her blessing has unintended results. I really enjoyed the way the "curse" plays out.

There are 3 (or rather 2.5) POVs in this book. The "third" POV is almost unnecessary, but it gives an interesting look into the perceived villain's thoughts.

With the protagonist masquerading as a boy, gender is at the forefront. I love when stereotypes are addressed and bring a conversation forward.

I really enjoyed the world building. The ogres are much different than what you'd expect. I want to see more of the fairies. The politics of the world were also interesting and easy to follow.

I would love to see more books set in this world. I give this book a 4/5 and highly recommend it. I will definitely be looking into more books by Stacey Jay.

Why?: I LOVE Fairy Tale Retellings! This seems more like a sequel, but I'm sure the original fairy tale will have at least a few differences. Now that I think about it, and after quickly wikipedia-ing, I realize that I'm not that familiar with the original Sleeping Beauty story. So, I may have to find it or just research it a lot online while or after reading this.

Expectations:I'm expecting an awesome fantasy fairy tale retelling with a strong female protagonist. I'm hoping for some awesome world building and some unexpected twists.

Judging a book by its cover: I really like the thorns in the font of the title. I also like the ambiguity of the character on the front. I'm assuming it is the princess, but it may be a male character. The white hair reminds me of both Daenarys from Game of Thrones and the Winterians from Snow Like Ashes

Asleep (Fairy Tale Collection #2) by Elizabeth Darcy - Ashley's Review

*I received this book as an eARC from NPC Books on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*

Title: Asleep

My Pre-Reading

Synopsis:
**Note: This book contains some mature content**

A reimagining of the sleeping beauty tale.

When her beloved Prince Devaran is abducted from her parents’ castle during their engagement announcement ceremony, Princess Jessmyn vows that nothing will stop her from bringing his abductors to justice. Rescuing Dev won't be easy, and Jess will have to form an alliance with the other Realms if she's to win the most important battle of her life.

Imprisoned in a forbidding tower, Dev tries to find a way to warn Jess of the perils she’ll face. Weakened by deprivation and by the drugs administered by the madwoman who kidnapped him, Dev drifts between sleep and consciousness. As he relives cherished moments spent with Jess, Dev wonders if he’ll ever again be with the woman he loves.

------------------------------

Review: Fairy tale retellings are my favorite types of stories. I love when an old, classic story is rewritten in a fresh new way, with new characters and new situations. And this book does exactly that. Instead of the Princess being the "sleeping beauty", Prince Dev is captured and made to sleep against his will. Then, his bride-to-be and warrior princess Jess decides it's up to her to rescue him from the clutches of the evil woman who took him.

But honestly, that's about where the similarities to Sleeping Beauty end. Dev isn't cursed from birth by a villain as awesome as Maleficent, he's not hidden in the woods in the hopes that he'll never touch a spinning wheel, and he doesn't sleep until his true love comes to kiss him awake. There's no "Prince Charming" that just randomly decides to swoop in and save him. So this is basically a VERY loose reimagining of the Sleeping Beauty tale.

I think I would have liked this book more if it hadn't been presented as a Sleeping Beauty tale. I spent too much of the time looking for similarities than I spent appreciating the differences. I love a strong heroine, and Jess is just that, but she didn't really get many opportunities to show her strength. Everything is just too easy for her - thy figure out fairly quickly who took Dev to begin with, the troops they need basically just fall into their laps. they know exactly where Dev is being held, and then Jess manages to find Dev with little to no problem. She goes through a lot emotionally, but I found those parts to be pretty tedious. I wish we had been able to see more of her training her troops or leading them into battle or something.

I felt the same way about her mother, the warrior queen Farah, and her future brother-in-law, Tanvir. These characters had so much potential, but we just don't learn much about them. With the little bit of information we had bout Tanvir, I found myself liking him more than I liked Dev. I think it was just because I could relate more to him (he's very logical and always has his nose stuck in a book).I loved Farah in the scenes she was in, but I wish we had gotten to learn more about her past and about how she became such a kick-ass warrior queen. The minor characters are nice, but they're very underdeveloped. At least in my opinion.

For me, the beginning of this book was very slow. It took me until about halfway through to finally get into the story, and I think a lot of that had to do with how many flashbacks there were to how Dev and Jess fell in love. I mean, it's interesting, and I usually love flashbacks, but there were just too many too often for my tastes. The next 40% of this book was great - the pace picked up and we got to see some action and learn a little bit more about the villain. And then the last part was just... WTF. The way the villain was defeated seemed like a HUGE cop out, and very out of character. I found myself very confused as to why and how things happened the way they did. And then after Dev is taken home, the rest of the book just seems unnecessary. It's very epilogue-y, and sappy feel-good epilogues really annoy me. This book should have ended like 4 chapters before it actually did.

I think, going into this book, I had too many expectations about this being a Sleeping Beauty story and that's why I ended up so disappointed with it. I didn't hate it, but it just wasn't what I thought it was going to be and what I hoped it would be, and I found myself skimming more than reading. I think someone looking for a fantasy romance YA book would enjoy this, as long as you go into it not looking for all the things to be Sleeping Beauty related. Just take it for ed by kings and queens and split into world ruled by kings and queens and split into  world ruled by kings and queens and split into Five Realms. I wanted to like this book so much, but I can only give it a 2/5.

As he relives cherished moments spent with Jess, Dev wonders if he’ll ever again be with the woman he loves.

Why?: I love a good fairytale reimagining! I haven't seen many out there for Sleeping Beauty, so I'm curious to see how this story gets an update. Or has a new spin. It looks like the Prince is the "damsel in distress" in this story, so it ought to be interesting to see how Darcy handles that. Also, it looks like this is a second book in a series but has no relation to the first one... so I hope I don't get really confused.

Expectations: I expect something pretty different from the original. A strong heroine who has to go on an adventure to rescue her prince, some romance, maybe a dragon or two. I'm kind of hoping the "mature content" warning doesn't cover the whole book, but who knows. I hope it's just a couple of scenes or something minor like that, because I'm not really looking for an explicit book.

Judging a book by its cover: The cover isn't really anything special to me. I mean, it looks like a fairy tale book. I'm not sure I would pick it up if I saw it somewhere on a shelf. I don't think it would stand out enough to warrant my attention.
