Made for You by Melissa Marr
Published by: HarperCollins
Publication date: September 16th 2014
Genres: Southern Gothic, Young Adult

Synopsis: Bestselling author of the Wicked Lovely books Melissa Marr’s first contemporary YA novel is a twisted southern gothic tale of obsession, romance, and murder. A killer is obsessed with Eva Tilling. Can she stop him, or will he claim her?

When Eva Tilling wakes up in the hospital, she’s confused—who in her sleepy little North Carolina town could have hit her with their car? And why? But before she can consider the question, she finds that she’s awoken with a strange new skill: the ability to foresee people’s deaths when they touch her. While she is recovering from the hit-and-run, Nate, an old flame, reappears, and the two must traverse their rocky past as they figure out how to use Eva’s power to keep her friends—and themselves—alive. But while Eva and Nate grow closer, the killer grows increasingly frantic in his attempt to get to Eva.

For the first time, New York Times bestselling author Melissa Marr has applied her extraordinary talent to contemporary realism. Chilling twists, unrequited obsession, and high-stakes romance drive this Gothic, racy thriller—a story of small-town oppression and salvation. Melissa’s fans, and every YA reader, will find its wild ride enthralling.

Ashley's Review

I've never read Melissa's Wicked Lovely series, although I've heard really great things about it, so going in to this book I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. I mean, the synopsis sounds fantastic and creepy and everything a great Gothic novel should be. And after reading Made For You, I'm pretty sure this is one of the best Gothic novels I've ever read! Seriously, it's so good.

Each chapter in Made For You takes place on a specific day after Eva's accident. Most of them are from Eva's perspective, and deal with her trying to figure out her new abilities and who tried to kill her. But there are also several chapters from the perspective of Judge - the person who is obsessed with and who tried to kill Eva. Eva's chapters are great for moving the story along, but Judge's chapters are actually kind of terrifying. It's so creepy to read about how he does everything for Eva, expecting her to understand and knowing she has no idea what in the world is going on.

Although the reader does find out who Judge is well before Eva and her friends, it doesn't ruin the mystery of anything or make the book drag along. If anything, it made the stakes higher and the suspense even worse. Like now that we know who Judge is, reading about him anywhere near Eva just about gave me a mini heart attack.

I also really enjoyed the romance in Made For You. Although Judge is obsessed with Eva and is convinced she was made for him and he was made for her, Eva doesn't see things that way. She has a huge crush on her childhood friend Nate, who suddenly stopped talking to her when his parents divorced. Although I think some things were a little too convenient, I enjoyed watching them become friends and develop a relationship from past and present feelings. He's really a great guy and a great friend, and I was glad that Eva had someone like Nate watching out for her while she was recovering at home. Friendships are important too, and Eva's best friend was probably my favorite character in the whole book. She didn't grow up with everyone and would be a social outcast if it wasn't for Eva, but she's a better friend and person than any of Eva's other friends.

I would definitely recommend Made For You to anyone looking for a contemporary Gothic novel set in the South, full of Southern traditions and culture. Especially if you don't mind a little bit of a paranormal twist. This is a thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat right up until the very end. This is a standalone, which was nice, but I'll definitely be looking in to more of Melissa's books! 4/5.

  1. Great review, Ashley! Wicked Lovely was really good - though I read it a very long time ago so I don't remember many details from it. This one sounds awsome, though! I love that the bad guy is given a POV - what a great way to bring up the suspense and anxiety! I really need to give this one a try!
