Review:
Aberrant and Moirai where gripping, exciting books that tells the story of a fertile girl in an infertile world, a rebel uprising, love, adventure, and so much more. Isaura picks up pretty much immediately after Moirai ends, and still has most of those things. For me though, it just fell a little short. Maybe because my expectations were higher?

The major thing that kind of bothered me about Isaura was the pacing. Sure, it moved along quickly and Olivia never just sat around.. but I think it moved too quickly. I often found myself having to backtrack and find out what in the world had just happened because things would just shift to some point in the future with no warning. The conflicts are resolved extremely quickly (the one from the end of Moirai is resolved in the first few chapters), and things change from believable to unbelievable. I just felt like it didn't really fit with the world or with the other books in the series.

I did like that the romance wasn't as heavy in this book (it was still there, but Olivia had bigger problems to worry about), and I thought the concept of Isaura and what she was trying to do were really interesting. She's such a gray-area character - definitely selfish and the "villain" and going about things the wrong way, but what she accomplishes changes the world. I wish we had been able to learn more about her, because I kind of felt like she was just a ghost that shows up, messes things up, and then disappears again.

I really wanted this book to be so much more than it was, but I still enjoyed it and thought it was a nice conclusion to the series. Nothing's really left open-ended, and the story is tied up. I would still recommend this book to anyone who has read the other two books in the series, and the series to any fans of sci-fi dystopian books. 3/5.

Moirai (Aberrant #2) by Ruth Silver - Ashley's Review

Synopsis: Olivia has been on the run from the government of Cabal since the marriage ceremony. Finally settling in and finding herself a place to call home, in Shadow, Olivia and Joshua are preparing for the uprising that they and the rebel alliance have been planning for months.

With new abilities and special talents, from Mindonsiphan, Olivia learns that she can do more than most ordinary eighteen year olds. Learning both to hide and perfect her skills will be one of the biggest challenges she'll be forced to face.

A constant roller coaster of emotion and adventure await Olivia and Joshua, as they embark on a journey to the rebel city of Torv, and what was once home, Genesis.

-------------------------------------------------

Review: Moirai picks up not too long after the end of Aberrant, and just keeps running from there. It's fast paced, gripping, and has all of the qualities of an excellent YA dystopia book. I found that I didn't want to put it down, and wanted to keep reading to find out what was next for Olivia, Joshua, and their friends. Especially since there's an uprising in the works!

One thing that kind of bothered me throughout the whole book though was how clingy Olivia and Joshua both were. I mean, I know they're in love and have been best friends since childhood and that they're on the run together and all they want to do is get married and be together but good grief. Sometimes this felt like a straight romance, and while I appreciate a good romance, I just wasn't prepared for how prominent it was. It sometimes felt like it forced the whole rebel uprising overthrow the government plot line to take a back seat. I did appreciate that it wasn't instalove though, since they've been cultivating feelings since they were very young. But still.

Olivia and Josh are forced to grow and mature by leaps and bounds in this novel, and I think Ruth showed that very well. Even though the book is from Olivia's perspective, the minor characters are still developed and it was interesting to see how they change in Olivia's eyes as she gets to know them better and they reveal more of themselves to her. Friends are lost, and friends are gained, and I'm glad that nothing was really sugarcoated over. When there's a disaster somewhere, Ruth doesn't force characters to live through it. It gave the book a realistic feel - like this could be a possible future and things like this could possibly happen in that future.

While this book is very fast-paced, I never felt like it was TOO fast. It kept me hooked, and I just couldn't flip pages fast enough, but I never felt like I was being rushed into situations or places. Olivia and her friends take time to plan things, and while we might not hear every single detail and months might go by between the initial meeting and the actual implementation, the time jumps are dealt with very well and smoothly. The plot flows for the most part, and I was never left feeling like I had no idea how we got from point A to point B. I also thought the title comes from a really interesting place, so that added a little bit more depth to this book too.

I would definitely recommend this to fans of the YA dystopian genre, especially if you like ones with a heavier sci-fi side to them. This book kind of had a Maze Runner feel to it (somewhere in the middle of the series though, not the first book), but I think people who enjoyed books like the Divergent series would also enjoy these books. 3/5!

In a race against time, her life and those she loves are in jeopardy.

Why?: After reading Aberrant and Moirai, I just had to pick up this book! This trilogy so far has been exciting, fast-paced, and has kept me on the edge of my seat. I have to find out how Olivia's story ends, and see if she's able to save herself and those she loves.

Expectations: As I've read these books, my expectations have steadily grown higher and higher. I expect this to be a thrilling conclusion to an excellent trilogy, and I expect that we learn even more about Olivia, her world, and especially the Gravelands.

Judging a book by its cover: I think the covers for these books are extremely well done, and so far have been very fitting for the books. I'm glad to see that Olivia's hair is still red, which is consistent with the books so far, and it definitely looks like she's standing in the Gravelands. Although these covers are pretty typical for YA books featuring a heroine, I would likely be inclined to pick this one up based solely on the cover.

A constant rollercoaster of emotion and adventure await Olivia and Joshua, as they embark on a journey to the rebel city of Torv, and what was once home, Genesis.

Why?: I read Aberrant not too long ago (the link for my review is above), and I enjoyed it quite a bit more than I expected to. It ends right in the middle of everything though, so of course I jumped at the chance to get my hands on Moirai!

Expectations: I expect this book to quite a bit more intense than Aberrant, but to still have the same suspense and excitement and world-building that the first book had. I have higher expectations now that I've read some of Ruth's work, so I'm really looking forward to diving into this one.

Judging a book by its cover: This cover is really similar to the first one, but I love how the model changed to reflect the changes that Olivia made in Aberrant. It's the same model, but her appearance is slightly different, just like Olivia. Based only on the cover though, I'm not sure if I would pick this up. The girl on the front is so stereotypical YA that I'm afraid it would just blend in with all of the other books out there.

-----------------------------------

Review: This book really surprised me! Most of it was exactly what I expected, but other parts were even better. The situations are extraordinary, but Olivia and Joshua are very real and react to circumstances pretty much like you would imagine a couple of 18 year olds to react when they realize their whole life is a lie.

While the idea of the dystopian society isn't new, Ruth puts her own spin on things and makes something very common in YA literature a world all her own. I definitely felt the influence of big-name dystopia books in this one (Divergent kept coming to mind while I was reading), but the similarities are only enough that fans of one would probably enjoy the other. I really enjoyed the world building and learning about all of the different cities and types of people, even if we only got a small taste.

The pacing is very quick and the plot moves along almost at breakneck speed, so it was a little difficult to keep up at times. One problem I had with the plot though was that the synopsis pretty much gives away the whole book. The twists and turns and big reveals aren't given away, but I always felt like I knew what was coming up even if I didn't know the path. Some of the twists surprised me, so that was nice. I wish the synopsis was shorter or less detailed or something because I want to be able to experience a book on my own. I don't want to be told what's going to happen step-by-step.

This book is from Olivia's perspective, and it was interesting to see things from the only natural-born girl in the world. The explanation as to why women are infertile is a little fast and not well explained, but I thought it was an interesting concept. I'm also really curious now to see if Olivia is actually able to have children naturally, and I hope this is explored more in the rest of the series! I really enjoyed seeing how she changed and matured after learning about her origin, her past, and then having to be on the run - twice. She still has quite a ways to go, I think, so it will be interesting to see how she handles new situations now that her world has been turned upside down.

Josh, on the other hand, kind of drove me crazy. He was a pretty big jerk fairly often and I kind of wanted Olivia to just slap him. I mean, he eventually shapes up and stops making jokes that could be very hurtful, but still. He acts like he's 12 instead of 18 sometimes and it's really annoying. The romance between him and Olivia is totally understandable an comfortable though, since they became best friends at 5 and have been basically inseparable since then so that didn't bother me once he started acting his age.

I would definitely recommend this book to fans of the popular dystopian books, like Divergent or The Hunger Games, especially if you're looking for a little sci-fi thrown in. I think fans of Crewel would also enjoy this book. It was a quick, engaging read, so it would be a perfect candidate for someone looking for an afternoon read. I'm looking forward to reading Moirai next! 3/5

Aberrant (Aberrant #1) by Ruth Silver - Ashley's Pre-Reading

Leaving would mean most certain death in the large expanse of the Gravelands.

Time is running out as the government mounts an attack to destroy Olivia and bury her secret with her. Thrown into a world unlike their own, they must quickly adapt to survive.

Why?: I'm always up for a good dystopian book, and this one sounds interesting. A society that dictates who you marry, when and who is allowed to have children, and punishes those that are born outside of the government regulations? I want to know more about this world and the government and why things are they way they are!

Expectations: I expect a pretty fast-paced book with a very controlling government that makes everyone's lives really difficult even though they don't think anything of it. Action, adventure, and a girl who saves the world (eventually).

Judging a book by its cover: While I actually like this cover, with the girl standing in what looks like a desert, I don't think it really stands out like it should. Like every other YA book with a female protagonist, I think this one would blend in too easily with the crowd. Because of that, I don't know that I would pick it up based solely on the cover.
