And I Darken (The Conqueror's Saga #1) by Kiersten White - Ashley's Review

*I received a copy of this book as an eARC from Random House Children's/Delacorte Press on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*

Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Goodreads

Title: And I Darken (The Conquerors Saga #1)
Author: Kiersten White
Publication Date: June 28th, 2016

Synopsis: No one expects a princess to be brutal. And Lada Dragwlya likes it that way. Ever since she and her gentle younger brother, Radu, were wrenched from their homeland of Wallachia and abandoned by their father to be raised in the Ottoman courts, Lada has known that being ruthless is the key to survival. She and Radu are doomed to act as pawns in a vicious game, an unseen sword hovering over their every move. For the lineage that makes them special also makes them targets.

Lada despises the Ottomans and bides her time, planning her vengeance for the day when she can return to Wallachia and claim her birthright. Radu longs only for a place where he feels safe. And when they meet Mehmed, the defiant and lonely son of the sultan, Radu feels that he’s made a true friend—and Lada wonders if she’s finally found someone worthy of her passion.

But Mehmed is heir to the very empire that Lada has sworn to fight against—and that Radu now considers home. Together, Lada, Radu, and Mehmed form a toxic triangle that strains the bonds of love and loyalty to the breaking point.

Review: When I first heard about the premise behind And I Darken - Vlad the Impaler, but a female - I knew I had to read this book. I've enjoyed the other books by Kiersten White that I've read, so I had pretty high expectations going into this one. Kiersten delivered a thrilling story, filled with fantastic world-building, excellent character development, and relationships of every type. It was so hard for me to put this book down, and it left me with a ridiculous book hangover when it was over!

I am not a huge history buff. I usually know enough to get by, but I still enjoy a good story set in a real time and place. Although the Ottoman Empire and Wallachia are pretty well established settings, Kiersten puts her own touch on things and makes it feel like these places were created just for Lada, Radu, and Mehmed. I loved seeing the world through their eyes, and getting to know them through how they interacted and felt about the people and cultures of these vastly different places. There were many times when I felt like I was actually there, lying under the stars with Lada and Radu, or riding through the countryside with them. I experienced the Ottoman courts with them and it was really interesting to see it from two differing opinions (Lada despises the Ottomans, but Radu considers it more like home than Wallachia).

Lada and Radu are such very different characters, and I couldn't help but love them both. Lada is harsh and ruthless, and will do whatever it takes to protect her family and her country. She is not a heroine, but neither is she a villain. She's just doing what she feels is necessary to survive. When she cares about someone or something, she loves passionately. Things are very black and white for her, and there is no gray zone. Radu, on the other hand, is more lover than fighter. He's soft-spoken and would rather use his intelligence to win a war than to go in and fight his way to the top with a sword. He is also very passionate, but tends to have a better handle on his feelings than Lada. Their relationship is very volatile and I really enjoyed watching it develop over the course of the book. They both sacrifice so much for each other, and I hope we get to see more of their relationship in the next book.

Then there's Mehmed. Both Lada and Radu care deeply for Mehmed, but neither of them really have a very healthy relationship with him. He's a wonderful friend to them in their biggest time of need, and he helps Radu to become more comfortable with himself and his new home, and breaks through Lada's tough shell and gives her something to direct her incredible passion towards. As the son of the sultan though, his life is complicated and he inevitably ends up hurting both Lada and Radu without ever meaning to. The complex triangle between them is always shifting and changing, and left me wondering how things were going to work out (if they ever would).

There are several jumps in time, but they're not really sudden and make sense when they occur. It also helps the plot move along at a good pace, since we skip over the years/months/days when nothing of significance occurs.I thought that the pacing of the book was pretty decent most of the way through, although there were a few parts in the middle that felt like they dragged a little bit. Although most of the plot points wrap up by the end of this book, I could definitely see how there could be room for a sequel, and I hope we get to see much more of Lada, Radu, and Mehmed!

Overall, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a dark, genderbent, historical fiction with fantastic characters and even better world-building. There are also some fantasy elements to the book, which is part of what drew me to it and kept me hooked. This is definitely my favorite Kiersten White book that I've read so far, and I will definitely be looking forward to the next one! 4/5.

Perfect Lies (Mind Games #2) by Kiersten White - Ashley's Review

Title: Perfect Lies (Mind Games #2)
Author: Kiersten White
Publication Date: February 18, 2014

My Prefect Lies Pre-Reading
My Mind Games Review
My Mind Games Pre-Reading

Synopsis: Annie and Fia are ready to fight back.

The sisters have been manipulated and controlled by the Keane Foundation for years, trapped in a never ending battle for survival. Now they have found allies who can help them truly escape. After faking her own death, Annie has joined a group that is plotting to destroy the Foundation. And Fia is working with James Keane to bring his father down from the inside.

But Annie's visions of the future can't show her who to trust in the present. And though James is Fia's first love, Fia knows he's hiding something. The sisters can rely only on each other - but that may not be enough to save them.

-------------------------------------------------------

Review: I really love books about sisters, and I feel like there aren't enough great ones out there. Mind Games was incredible and I loved being introduced to these two strong, amazing, sisters. Perfect Lies continues their crazy story, and had me hooked from the first page. There's a lot that happens in this book, but at the heart of it is still the relationship between Annie and Fia and how it drives them and helps them survive.

Both girls are fantastic, well-rounded characters who are willing to do whatever it takes to save the other one, even if it means sacrificing themselves. In this book, though, I think Annie is my favorite character. She spends so much of the first book being told what to do and how to live her life, and she does a complete 180 in Perfect Lies. She grows into this feisty, strong-willed, independent woman who no longer sits around helpless waiting for someone to tell her what to do. She uses her disabilities and weaknesses to her advantage, and turns into this fantastic heroine.

Fia matures and changes a lot over the course over this book too, but things just don't ever seem to go her way. For a girl with perfect instincts, she really seems to end up in bad situations more often than not. There were a lot of times where I felt like Fia had no regard for her own safety, since she didn't have to worry about keeping Annie safe anymore. She's reckless, and crazy, but she's still as strong-willed and powerful as she was in Mind Games. Fia also has a lot of trust issues - not that I blame her, nobody around her is trustworthy - and that definitely doesn't help.

Just like the first book, Perfect Lies is a fast-paced thriller full of action, adventure, romance, and a sisterly bond that cannot be broken no matter how far its stretched. The stream-of-consciousness is a little off-putting at first but is easy to jump right back into. I was a little sad when I got to the end because now Annie and FIa's story is over, but I thought it ended well and didn't leave many loose ends. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys psychological thrillers, especially if you're looking for one that features incredible heroines who make the most of their disabilities and aren't hindered by them. I can't wait to read more from Kiersten White! 4/5.

My Pivot Point Pre-Reading

Synopsis: Life can change in a split second.

Addie hardly recognizes her life since her parents divorced. Her boyfriend used her. Her best friend betrayed her. She can’t believe this is the future she chose. On top of that, her ability is acting up. She’s always been able to Search the future when presented with a choice. Now she can manipulate and slow down time, too . . . but not without a price.

When Addie’s dad invites her to spend her winter break with him, she jumps at the chance to escape into the Norm world of Dallas, Texas. There she meets the handsome and achingly familiar Trevor. He’s a virtual stranger to her, so why does her heart do a funny flip every time she sees him? But after witnessing secrets that were supposed to stay hidden, Trevor quickly seems more suspicious of Addie than interested in her. And she has an inexplicable desire to change that.

Meanwhile, her best friend, Laila, has a secret of her own: she can restore Addie’s memories . . . once she learns how. But there are powerful people who don’t want to see this happen. Desperate, Laila tries to manipulate Connor, a brooding bad boy from school—but he seems to be the only boy in the Compound immune to her charms. And the only one who can help her.

As Addie and Laila frantically attempt to retrieve the lost memories, Addie must piece together a world she thought she knew before she loses the love she nearly forgot . . . and a future that could change everything.

-------------------------------------------------

Review: This book is exactly how a sequel should be done! Kiersten White knocked it out of the park, and I'm still a little upset that it's over. I read this book in basically one sitting and it left me wanting to start the series all over again just to experience it again. This was a fantastic conclusion to the duology, and even though I wish there was more I'm kind of glad it wasn't a trilogy. It wraps up perfectly in just two books.

I really liked that Split Second is written from both Addie and Laila's perspectives. Pivot Point is kind of told from two perspectives as well (the alternate realities), but this gave a whole new depth to the story. Addie is, understandably, confused about why it feels like certain people and things are familiar when she's never seen them in the timeline she chose. Laila is conflicted over so many things, and I loved learning more about her. Her family life is rough, but she cares about her brothers and tries her best to care for them and even begins to see things from her dad's point of view a little bit. Not much, because he's still the source of their problems, but a little bit.

There's so much that goes on in this book, and somehow Kiersten makes it all seem important and related. For example, Laila's brother is two years older than most kids are when they present and still hasn't shown any signs of a mental gift. In the midst of trying to figure out how to advance her own ability, Laila tries to help her brother. I mean, that's all well and good and sisterly... but I didn't even realize how important it would be to the overall story until much later. All of the minor characters are even somehow important and interesting, and I realy enjoyed seeing familiar facfes as well as meeting new people.

The relationships in this book are really well done too. Addie and Laila are best friends, but they still disagree sometimes. Addie's relationship with her dad is strained and they fight, which is something they've never done before but is totally understandable considering the circumstances. Duke is still a jerk and I found myself wanting to punch him in the face pretty much every time he shows up. Laila and Addie both get romantic interests, and it was really fun watching their relationships develop. I still loved Trevor!

I would 100% recommend this book to anyone who has read Pivot Point. You want to read this sequel to know how the story ends! I would also recommend this duology to anyone looking for a thrilling read with romance, mystery, action, and all of the things a good thriller could have. It all seems really realistic, which is pretty awesome/kind of terrifying. A 5/5!

Why?: I thoroughly enjoyed Mind Games, and have been waiting to get my hands on a copy of this book to finish Annie & Fia's story. Especially after the ending of Mind Games! I have to know how things turn out, and if the sisters are enough to save each other or not!

Expectations: Since I enjoyed Mind Games so much, I have pretty high expectations for this book. I expect it to be very stream-of-consciousness and fast-paced. I also think this book will be more intense than Mind Games since it's the conclusion of Annie & Fia's story. I expect most questions to be answered although more will probably arise, and I expect relationship drama than before.

Judging a book by its cover: I really like that this cover so closely matches the one from Mind Games. The girl's face is prominent, but it's made up of other scenes that are probably important to the story. I like how her eyes and lips stand out over everything and how the title is front and center, but simple. I would be really likely to pick this book up off of the shelf in a library or bookstore.

Mind Games (Mind Games #1) by Kiersten White - Ashley's Review

Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Goodreads

Title: Mind Games (Mind Games #1)
Author: Kiersten White
Year Published: 2013

My Mind Games Pre-Reading

Synopsis: Fia was born with flawless instincts. Her first impulse, her gut feeling, is always exactly right. Her sister, Annie, is blind to the world around her—except when her mind is gripped by strange visions of the future.

Trapped in a school that uses girls with extraordinary powers as tools for corporate espionage, Annie and Fia are forced to choose over and over between using their abilities in twisted, unthinkable ways…or risking each other’s lives by refusing to obey.

In a stunning departure from her New York Times bestselling Paranormalcy trilogy, Kiersten White delivers a slick, edgy, heart-stoppingly intense psychological thriller about two sisters determined to protect each other—no matter the cost.

-------------------------------------

Review: WOW. That basically sums up my reaction to this book. I was pleasantly surprised by most of this book, and I am so glad that I gave it a chance. It's been a while since I've read a good psychological thriller, and I loved that this one had a super-power thing going on. I also really enjoyed that it was written from both Fia's and Annie's perspectives - I think it really helped to figure out what was going on.

At first, I had a little bit of trouble getting into this book because of the writing style. It's written as if you were in the minds of Fia and Annie, and is literally their stream-of-conscience thoughts. It's a little jarring at first, and it took me a few chapters to get into. Once I was finally able to get past that though, I fell into the rhythm of this book and was able to really appreciate it. I liked all of the subtle things that you don't realize until later - like why Fia always does things and says things in patterns of three. I think it also really helped convey the panic the girls felt when they thought their sister was being threatened or could possibly be harmed.

Besides jumping from Fia to Annie, this book also jumps from the past to the present. It really helped me to discover who the girls really were and to figure out why they act the way they do. And seeing the sisters through each others' eyes helped me to learn more about them than I would have otherwise. Fia isn't allowed to visit Annie whenever she wants, and so she doesn't know what happens most of the time. Annie can only see glimpses of Fia, but never knows what will happen because Fia never plans ahead. It's very interesting, and I would imagine incredibly frustrating for the girls. I know I would be frustrated if I were in either of their positions.

Although there are romantic relationships in this book. the main focus is on the relationship between the sisters. They are each others' weakness, and neither wants to see her sister hurt in any way. Annie comes across as the weaker, helpless sister (since she can't see and her visions are only of Fia and even those are unreliable) and Fia is always taking care of her. But honestly, I felt like both girls had their weaknesses and really needed to learn to stand on their own. They both rely heavily on each other and while I appreciated that their sisterly bond is crazy strong, I thought that it was almost to strong.

The plot moves quickly despite the time jumps, and I found myself not wanting to put this book down. I wanted to keep reading to the very end just to find out what happens to Fia and Annie and how they protect each other. The ending was kind of what I expected, but some of the details surprised me. I can't wait to get my hands on Perfect Lies to find out how the story continues/ends. I want to know more about The Keane Foundation and about James. I want to know what Annie is doing. I have so many questions!

I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a fast-paced psychological thriller with hints of the X-Men. I wouldn't really recommend it to a younger audience though, because there are some scenes that I don't really think a younger audience would handle well. I want to read the next book ASAP! 4/5 for this one.

Mind Games (Mind Games #1) by Kiersten White - Ashley's Pre-Reading

Title: Mind Games (Mind Games #1)
Author: Kiersten White
Year Published: 2013

Synopsis:
Fia was born with flawless instincts.

Why?: Well, honestly, this was available to read for free for a weekend on EpicReads' website, so I figured I would give it a chance. It sounds really interesting - two sisters with vastly different powers who are forced to used them or else risk each other's lives? It sounds really intense and like it will be a roller coaster of emotions, and like something right up my alley.

Expectations: I haven't read anything by Kiersten White, so I'm not sure what to expect. This sounds vastly different from her other books though, so I don't think that would have helped very much anyway! Based on the synopsis, I except a fast-faced thriller with a fantasy edge to it and a school kind of like the one in X-Men only all-female and with more limited powers.

Judging a book by its cover: I really like this cover. It kind of has a digital feel to it, and I love how the girl's face is over all of it. I like the colors and the way her blue eyes and her pink lips pop, and I think it would definitely stand out on a shelf. The title is really simple too, which is nice with such a busy cover. I would probably pick it up if I saw it in a store.

Paul's Endlessly Review and GIVEAWAY!!!

*I received this as an ARC from epicreads*

Paranormalcy Review
Supernaturally Review
My Endlessly Pre Reading

This is our first GIVEAWAY!!! All the details can be found below my review!!!

Review: If you have read my reviews of the other two books in this series you will know my feelings on these books' covers. I do not like them. I don't think they accurately portray the feel of the book. The books are so fun and these covers look so serious and dramatic. And very paranormal romancy. These books may involve paranormals; they also may have a little bit of romance, but I think they are far different than the common paranormal romance. There are many instances when the characters within the books make fun of paranormal romance cliches, or specific paranormal romances.

My favorite thing about this series is how lighthearted and fun it is to read. I enjoy the many pop culture references. The chapter titles are also always fun to read.

This third book in a trilogy tied up the series very well. I enjoyed the depth White went into explaining the history and mythology of this world. The story of how the Faeries originally came to Earth was very interesting.

I love reading series because you really get to know the characters and the world they inhabit. White brought back almost every character from both books. Many of the minor characters reappear often. The paranormals like the Dragon and the different elementals were fun to read about. Characters that were once evil got their chance to redeem themselves. I liked that in the end, there weren't any characters that were evil purely to be evil. They all had their ideas of right and wrong and were pursuing their own plans. Because of this, there are many moral dilemmas. I like how White shows Evie considering all her options. Although, a pretty clean cut answer usually emerges in the end.

I would recommend this series to younger female readers interested in paranormal things. I am obviously not a young female, but I enjoyed this series too. I give this book a 4/5. That also makes this trilogy a solid 4/5.

Paul's Endlessly Pre Reading

*I received this as an ARC from epicreads*

Title:
Endlessly
Author: Kiersten White
Year Published: 2012

Synopsis:
Evie's paranormal past keeps coming back to haunt her. A new director at the International Paranormal Containment Agency wants to drag her back to headquarters. The Dark Faerie Queen is torturing humans in her poisonous realm. And supernatural creatures keep insisting that Evie is the only one who can save them from a mysterious, perilous fate.

The clock is ticking on the entire paranormal world. And its fate rests solely in Evie's hands.

So much for normal.

Why?: I have enjoyed the first two books in this series. I originally received this from epicreads, not thinking I would enjoy it because of the cover , but this series has surprised me.

Expectations:  I'm expecting to learn more about the paranormals like the Faeiries and Elementals as well as some new paranormals. I want to know more about the faerie history. I think this is the last in the series, so I expect a conclusive ending.

Judging a book by its cover: .I do not like this cover. I don't think any of the books in this series match their covers. I would not pick this book up because it looks like another angtsy paranormal romance probably with a love triangle and a weak female lead. Thankfully, I know Evie is a strong female character and the romance is natural and not the primary story.

Paul's Supernaturally Review

Pre Reading
Paranormalcy Review

This series continues to surprise me. I may have to reconsider judging some books by their covers. Personally, I think the cover doesn't match the story, but maybe other YA books with teen models aren't all about the romance. I really enjoyed this sequel.

The biggest disappointment I have with this book is that it wrapped up the ending, for the most part. I wish it would have ended a few chapters before it did. I actually wanted a cliffhanger ending. This trilogy seems more like a series with an undetermined about of books than a trilogy. I don't know if that was Kiersten White's intentions or not.

The new character of Jack was annoying, but I'm pretty sure that was White's intentions. It was unfortunate that Jack helped revert Evie to her more teen angsty ways.

My favorite part of this series is White's take on so many different paranormal beings. I really enjoyed the backstory of how vampires came to be. The world that I so enjoyed in Paranormalcy is even deeper in this sequel. The Faerie Realm was really interesting. The imagery was amazing. I like that each book introduces more paranormals and more information about paranormals already introduced.

I liked that Lend is pursuing a college degree in zoology with the intentions of studying cryptozoology. I was a little confused as to why or how he was taking vertebrate biology as a freshmen. I don't know about other universities, but in my college Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy was a higher level course.

I give this novel a 4/5. This series is a fun easy read in a really interesting world of paranormal beings.

Paul's Supernaturally Pre Reading

Title: Supernaturally
Author: Kiersten White
Year Published: 2011

Synopsis:
Evie finally has the normal life she’s always longed for. But she’s shocked to discover that being ordinary can be...kind of boring. Just when Evie starts to long for her days at the International Paranormal Containment Agency, she’s given a chance to work for them again. Desperate for a break from all the normalcy, she agrees.

But as one disastrous mission leads to another, Evie starts to wonder if she made the right choice. And when Evie’s faerie ex-boyfriend Reth appears with devastating revelations about her past, she discovers that there’s a battle brewing between the faerie courts that could throw the whole supernatural world into chaos. The prize in question? Evie herself. So much for normal.

Why?:  I am quickly reading through this series. It has surprised me so far.

Expectations: I enjoyed Paranormalcy, so I am hoping this is similar, but different enough. I like it when sequels don't just have the same formula as their predecessor with a few details switched around. Why is she back with IPCA? There better be a good explanation for that! I am glad Reth is back. He was an interesting character in the first book and there are so many unanswered questions about, not only, him but also the Faeries as a whole. The Faerie Courts sound really interesting.

Judging a book by its cover:  I do not like this cover. I would not pick this book up in the store. But, I said the same for Paranormalcy.

Paul's Review of Paranormalcy

Pre Reading

This makes two books in a row that I don't like their covers. I don't think this cover portrays the feel of the book. I feel that this cover is so similar to so many other paranormal romance novels out there. A romance does come into play in this novel, but there's so much more.

I was really surprised by this novel. I wouldn't have picked it up just from the synopsis had I not received the third in the series free. I ended up really enjoying it. The story takes place in our world, except there is an organization (the IPCA) that internationally takes care of any Paranormal problems. It is like a paranormal Men In Black, except the protagonist is a 16 year old girl with the ability to see through the Paranormals' glamour to their true selves. This book reminded me of an old tv series on the Disney Channel when I was growing up, So Weird. Each week the teenage Fiona would come across some crazy paranormal being while traveling the world on a tour bus with her mother's band.

White put an interesting spin on a lot of the well known paranormals. For example, the fairies don't have wings and are so creepy. I liked the use of bread and iron as deterrents as well.

At times I thought the teen angst overpowered pressing situations. Although, it may be understandable considering how much Evie wants to be just a normal teenage girl in high school with a boyfriend and an awesome locker.

Each character in this novel was well written. They all had their own subtleties. One character has very descriptive sighs. A mermaid's translator turns all curse words to bleeps. Evie is completely obsessed with a popular teen drama. Another character sketches well.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and will continue reading the series. I give this book a 4/5. I recommend it to anyone interested in paranormal beings with a bit of teen girl drama. It reminds me of the Wake series by Lisa McMann.

Paul's Paranormalcy Pre Reading

I received Endlessly from epicreads right before it came out. I hadn't read the first two installments in the trilogy, but thought the books sounded really interesting. I got Paranormalcy when it was really cheap for kindle.

Title: Paranormalcy
Author: Kiersten White
Year Published: 2010

Synopsis: Weird as it is working for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, Evie’s always thought of herself as normal. Sure, her best friend is a mermaid, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she's falling for a shape-shifter, and she's the only person who can see through paranormals' glamours, but still. Normal.

Only now paranormals are dying, and Evie's dreams are filled with haunting voices and mysterious prophecies. She soon realizes that there may be a link between her abilities and the sudden rash of deaths. Not only that, but she may very well be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures.

So much for normal.

Why?: I received Endlessly, so I am going to gradually read through the trilogy until I get to the final installment.

Expectations: I haven't read much urban fantasy so I don't know what to expect. I have heard the protagonist isn't a typical emo chick, but a preppy pink-loving teen instead. I expect a lot of paranormal things happening in the modern world.

Judging a book by its cover: This cover is not typically something I would pick up. It looks a little too paranormal romancey for me.
